When I was in Italy a few years ago, Garibaldi’s legacy was so present – not so much the case for his incredible wife! Besides enjoying the chance to learn about Anita’s impressive feats, I appreciated your measured look at the positive and negative aspects of Garibaldi’s perspective on female agency. I’ve noticed similar attempts to envision physically stronger women in the novels of Dickens and Conrad – women can only go so far, because then what are the menfolk for? Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for your comment! I am not as familiar with the British literature and am looking for more potential comparisons. I will definitely look into Dickens and Conrad.
